Details & More Information

The Turquoise Oval Sterling Silver Dangle Earrings feature the Kingman Turquoise stone. The earrings have rope and feather designs surrounding the stones and hang from french hooks. In the Native American culture, Turquoise represents courage and strength. The earrings are made of .925 Sterling Silver, and on the back you can see the artist's stamp as well as a "Sterling" stamp. Kingman Turquoise is known for its large black inclusions in a sky blue stone. The Kingman Turquoise Mine is one of the oldest producing Turquoise mines in America. The color of Turquoise is determined by the content of iron and copper. The higher the iron content, the greener the stone; and the higher the copper content, the bluer the stone. Chuck Colbaugh had the Turquoise Mining contract for Ithaca Peak and Turquoise Mountain since the early 1960's and the concession is still in the family today run by Marty and son Josh Colbaugh. In ancient periods, Turquoise was used to help cure cataracts, and relief from other eye complications. In a prehistoric mining location in Kingman, Arizona, tools for smashing, polishing and finishing the Turquoise were found in trenches and tunnels. It is also believed that they fractured and cut the stones, by heating the Turquoise, then rapidly cooling the stone with cold water. Turquoise is considered by many a lucky stone.
